This week on the AVB Podcast we have blues artist South River Slim. Slim, as most people call him, is definitely someone that everyone should be on the look-out for. True to the roots, he really knows how to deliver the blues. If you’ve never seem him perform, make sure that gets on your bucket list, a true entertainer and he plays the harmonica too! As he tells us and is true to his word “…I put all that depth and passion thing, live for the day, into the music, every night…” This passion for music and the blues specifically just seeps out of him. This all seemed to come naturally for him, “…the feeling of the blues…”
Slim loves history and reads a lot, he likes to get to the “root” of whatever he is doing, being learning about history, reading, or performing. In Slim’s words “…without the roots, there is no fruits…” This desire to understand the meaning behind things lends itself to him being very grounded in the blues scene.
When Slim writes a song he pictures the song in his mind. “…it comes in an image, I remember the image and find it and get it and write the whole song about it…” When he performs his material, he usually picks songs on the fly, he doesn’t use set lists and just goes with the feel of the crowd. He likes to “…engage with the audience and look them in the eye…” he likes to know how his actions are affecting his audience. Slim truly cares about his fans and his performance which makes him that much more impressive to watch.
Slim has been a musician his whole life, but more recently, he has made music his priority. He faced some heavy challenges getting sick with cancer. He is now in remission still fighting it every day and music helps him get through it. Slim has a slightly new perspective on life and lives in “…this moment right now…anything can happen…” We can all learn something from this wise man. I will leave you all to it. This is definitely one you don’t want to miss!
